Use this simple pneumonic to help you get through your next exam:

S – Set it free! Take a slow deep breath and breathe out the negative              thoughts and fears.

T – Trust your first intuition! Don’t go back and change answers if your             not 100% positive.

R – Read every word of the question more than once. Rule out every answer before choosing.

E- Endurance! If you don’t know the answer right away, don’t give up
and make a guess. Skip it and come back later.

S- Stay focused on the content you do know, rather than worry about
            what you don’t.
S- Stay calm and confident- know that you’re not alone. You’ve got what it takes and can do this!

Survival Strategies for Taking Tests

Before you begin

  • Get comfortable in your chair.
  • Take a few slow deep breathes; supplying your body & brain with lots of good, clean oxygen.
  • Each time you breath out, say the word “relax” to yourself.
  • Read the instructions fully. Your instructor may have included special directions for you to follow.
  • Make sure all questions and pages are present on your exam.

Taking the Test

  • Skip the difficult questions. You may find your answer come to you after you’ve worked more of the test.
  • Ask the instructor to explain any of the items that are unclear.
  • Try to answer from the instructor’s point of view. What did they emphasize as important in class?
  • Circle key words in difficult questions. This will allow you to focus on what’s really being asked.
Use all time allotted for the test. If you have time, cover up your answers and actually rework the question. Remember, your final exams are all cumulative now- so you’re going to want to remember any test items that you can.
